Mexico: Criminal ambushes in Jalisco – a hyper-violent wave of cartel brutality /Antonio Sampaio

Criminal attacks against the police and even the armed forces are nothing new in Mexico. Since 2006, organised crime in the country has adopted militarised strategy in order to compete in a crowded drug-trafficking market. But even Mexicans have been surprised and shocked in recent weeks by a display of heightened military prowess and boldness from criminal groups. A series of well-organised ambushes in western Jalisco state has left 28 dead, most of them police officers. The latest attack took place on 6 April, when 15 police officers were killed by suspected members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The wave of attacks began on 19 March, and demonstrated the appetite that the CJNG is developing for direct confrontation with security authorities. A detachment of the new gendarmerie, the paramilitary force launched last year by President Enrique Pena Nieto, was surrounded by armed men travelling in ten vehicles. SEE MORE…
